Scenario planning involves writing separate narratives about the future and identifying actions to respond to both worst-case and best-case scenarios. With this approach, nonprofits develop alternative ideas about what the future will bring.
“To prepare for what is most certainly a very unpredictable future, nonprofits need to think through different scenarios and plan for what they will do if/when that future arrives,” said Clark. “My recommendation is creating three different scenarios for the next 6-12 months.” According to Clark, “Planning for more than one future is a proactive step to take when leading a nonprofit through difficult times. It also helps organizations communicate with board members, staff, volunteers, and donors to quell fears about uncertainty and strategically ease, vs. frantically scramble, into the future.”
